I thought Mexico had incredibly regressive immigration laws and an unfriendly attitude toward migrants/foreign workers. My gf is from Guatemala and tells me that Mexico is significantly less welcoming to Guatemalans and Hondurans than the US is toward Mexicans. Maybe that's started to change recently though, I dunno.

Now I can't speak to Mexico specifically but perception is everything. Australia is a great example - tough immigration laws, not very welcoming, still has high immigration because it's a desirable place to live. That's really what it comes down to.

The "throwing in Christianity" thing is misleading because the series was written on an episode to episode basis under awful time constraints, so nobody on staff but him knew what anything meant. It was less "this meant nothing" and more "I wasn't told what this means".

Yes, additionally while things like cross shaped explosions are obviously just window dressing, there are many cases where the symbolism obviously does mean something. Even just very minor things like angel names.

Also, the dub gets better as it goes on. It is definitely a case of good main cast bad supporting cast however. The sub is probably better overall, but watching either or both won't turn you too wrong. Although, at episode 7 you have yet to meet the character who was the most improved in the dub.

What do you mean by the dilemma not working?

Are you that detached from human emotion?

It's not about the emotional angle, it's about the logical angle. When you stop to think about it, there's no dilemma.

Of course, Nintendo have muddied the waters with these two games, it used to be that Super Mario meant mainline. Except for original Kart I guess.

Anyway, Sunshine is better than Land and NSMB2, but that's it. Maybe Lost Levels.

But the movies that gets thrown around at are very rarely deserving of it. For example, as was just brought up, Boyhood. Boring as hell movie with basically nothing going for it, praised as a masterpiece of cinema because of how it was made, which has.....absolutely nothing to do with how good it was and shouldn't even be a factor.

Kind of like how Leo won the Oscar for The Remnant because "he worked so hard, it was so tough!" even though he was one of the weaker actors in that movie (man that accent).

Yeah but there are many films for which this is not the case. Like, what do you think about Gravity, 12 Years a Slave, or Fury Road? Those got a similar response.

Wonder Woman was good, but maybe it was just a fluke >__>

Wonder Woman was good in spite of DC. Not because of them.

The director or WW gave an article where she said the DC executives wanted them to cut the 'no man's land' scene from the movie. She had to fight tooth and nail to be allowed to keep it in.

I enjoyed the movie but it did not restore my trust in DC even a little.

Well for starters, don't confuse DC and Warner Brothers. There was no DC entity that was controlling the film's when the first three came out, it was all WB doing that stuff. Then, as of WW they have an actual DC films division, so if anything it's the opposite.

Also, don't read too much into the wanting to cut No Man's Land thing, this happens for every studio film. They wanted to cut the foot chase from Baby Driver for instance. Sometimes it's even a good thing.

Looks good but Cyborg looks dumb.

There are some reasons to be optimistic about this one too. Like Wonder Woman it is one of the movies they made after Geoff Johns came on board to actually sort out a coherent plan for the DC films that the first three did not have. Additionally Goyer's not writing this one, it's all Chris Terrio. And Joss Whedon is finishing it off. The trailers have been good unlike BvS which had that one good trailer then had all those terrible ones.

Also despite the second half, Luke Cage is still better than Daredevil season 2. The consistent decline is definitely true for new titles though. However, the Defenders ads they had up in Oxford Circus were pretty cool, so who knows.

Also to attempt to give an actual answer to the question despite it being hard to answer and probably asked in bad faith, the answer seems to mostly be "increasing polarization of wealth"

as poorer people become more desperate their lives begin to revolve more around the kinds of activities that get them killed. In rural/suburba areas this is mostly people killing themselves with opioids.

In cities theres a lot more chances for people to all be hustling over the same illegal methods of making money pie. The wide availability of guns doesnt help. The police chief was around saying that so many of these disputes being solved with guns when a while back they would have been fist fights is a huge part of it.

Point is bad wealth distribution leads to poor people dying not even just of starvation or lack of medical care but from lack of hope altogether. I suppose on this last point Trump threatening to take away peoplrs medical care probably does make them feel more desperate but i dont think that would have any effect at all if they werent already desperate.

Yes, income inequality. The US has the worst income inequality of any advanced economy, and is comparable to places like Nigeria and Indonesia. It's almost as if a system which does not impose restrictions on the very rich or provide adequate assurances for the very poor is bad, or something.

There's not much ripping on Castlevania. Brad is surprised there is still a fandom which is valid given his reasoning: there hasn't been a high profile Castlevania game in over 6 years, and fandoms do wither without new games. Look at Half-Life.

Although, Jeff does just dismiss the series outside the first three and SotN. Which is unusually shortsighted. The DS games are the best in the series.

@FFDragon - got a source on the Fox stuff? It seems odd given the first two made them a lot of money and they wanted to use F4 to set up their own cinematic universe which was scrapped before the film came out. It also seems suspect that they would deliberately lose money on a film to drive up the price when the deal Sony have would be substantially more lucrative.

Anyway, the Raimi films were unlike anything else when they came out. It is easy to forget as they have aged badly, but they were giant events. However, with the way superhero movies have gone I don't think a solo Spider-Man movie can be that big anymore.

I wonder what movies would look like today if Marvel hadn't whored themselves out to Sony and Fox early on.

I mean, I guess they were a necessary stepping stone in the beginning but...

We'd all be a lot worse off in terms of superhero movies. For starters the MCU probably would have never happened for various reasons. Even if it did emerge, Sony bankrolling this film means that Marvel can make other films with no extra cost, so we would see fewer films and fewer risks. And Marvel never would have done what Fox has so Deadpool, Logan, and the R-Rated big budget superhero film would not exist. I have to imagine that Warner Bros./DC would be running the genre unopposed.

I mean, unless they somehow sold the rights to Spiderman but not Venom, there was no transfer of rights involved whatsoever.

Meanwhile, unless the Vulture came about because Marvel's only allowed to use s***ty villains, Villains aren't a thing either, since Vulture's mostly obscure and wouldn't really be something anyone would think to transfer rights for.

So we know enough, really.

I'm pretty sure we know that Sony has the rights to make Spider character movies other than Spiderman set in the MCU, and that they plan to make a Black Cat and Venom movie.

It's worth emphasising that Sony is still making all the Spider-Man films, including this one. This is a Sony picture. It just happens to be set in the MCU in accordance with their deal with Marvel. Sony presumably could do things in or out of the MCU as long as Marvel agrees if it's the latter.

Relevant: http://variety.com/2015/film/news/details-spider-man-appear-in-sony-and-marvel-movies-1201429039/

Interestingly, Sony has been trying to do something like this for ages. TASM was supposed to be in the MCU. It makes sense as Sony and Marvel have always had a good relationship to my understanding. Definitely much better than the relationship between Marvel and a certain other studio.

Like, what was with the ages of Uncle Ben and Aunt May? They were about 20 years too old.

Er, if anything, they were probably too YOUNG. Aunt May's old as fuck, man. This movie's just a huge exception. Even Ultimate May's still pretty old, and that was the youngest they got until now.

They were the 79 and 73 year old aunt and uncle to a 17 year old. That is unusual to say the least. Old aunt and uncle makes sense for an older Peter Parker but for teenage Peter they should be in their 50's. Maybe early 60's.
